1-Personal Essay - Chuck Sims for 7th Dan Testing

In February of 1975, my Grandfather
walked me through the doors of Munchenberger Center and introduced me to Grand
Master Yu. I stepped into a new world
with students in white uniforms jumping, kicking, punching and yelling. It was very intimidating but it was also
something new and exciting. At that
time, I could not have imagined that 32 years later I’d still be training at
Yu’s Academy but today I am testing for the rank of Master Instructor.
The primary
goal of any martial art is to teach you how to protect yourself, if your life
is threatened. But the training at Yu’s
Academy goes much further than simple punching and kicking and various
self-defense techniques. It is about
learning how to live a higher quality of life through its simple tenets of
courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. Yu’s Academy also emphasizes the importance
of a good education through the summer book reading program and students
showing their report cards to Grandmaster Yu.
These are the true benefits of martial arts training at Yu’s Academy and
this is the reason that I am proud to be a member of this Yu’s family. Once you are a member of the Academy and
start seeing the benefits of this training, it makes you proud to be with such
an extraordinary group of individuals that share in the same goal of becoming
better martial artists and better people.
Through my experience
at Yu’s Academy, I’ve learned that you will not be able to recognize a good
black belt by how high they kick or how many concrete blocks they break, but by
the respect, and perseverance they show in the dedication to their art. All the great Grandmasters, Master
Instructors, Instructors and Black Belts that I’ve had the privilege of meeting
are very kind and gentle people that glow with a calm confidence and that is a
testament to their inner strength. I don’t
identify them as great because of their physical abilities; they are great
because of their character.
Grandmaster
Yu is a remarkable gentleman and exhibits each of these principles in the way
he conducts his life. He has given each
of us a great gift. The great qualities
of character that he teaches to all of his students can be carried throughout
their lives. Thank you Grandmaster Yu
for your vision and the strength to follow that vision to a reality. Your commitment to making your dream a
reality has benefited the thousands of students that have walked through the
doors of Yu’s Academy.
I also want
to thank all the students for their support and dedication and wish you all
success in all that you do. I want to
thank all the Master Instructors, Instructors and Black Belts for their knowledge,
dedication and loyalty to Yu’s Academy and Grandmaster Yu. I want to thank my family for their support
and patience with my long hours.
